The importance of mental health support for new parents cannot be overstated. The Straits Times highlighted an article on December 3, 2023, where a 33-year-old woman and her three-week-old baby were found dead at the foot of the HDB block where they lived. Such tragic incidents highlight the urgent need for greater awareness and support to ensure that struggling parents receive the help they need.
Postnatal depression is usually associated with mothers, but the condition can also afflict fathers. Recent insights from mental health experts highlight a growing trend of fathers experiencing symptoms such as irritability, anxiety, and even rage. The good news is that postpartum depression is highly treatable through psychotherapy, medication, support groups, or lifestyle changes can help individuals recover. Through psychotherapy, a therapist can help to identify unhelpful thought patterns, process feelings of shame, guilt, and inadequacy, and discuss practical ways to manage their stress.
Clarity Singapore introduced our maternal mental health service in 2016 and officially launched ClarityforMoms in 2024. Our team of therapists have undergone training and attachment at KKH and IMH in order provide these specialised support services. Recognising the need to address paternal stresses, Clarity has extended our service to include fathers.
It is crucial to strengthen support systems by involving and educating not only husbands, but also family members, professionals who often work around new mothers, and employers. As a society, we need to be informed about identifying warning signs, available treatments, and the importance of respectful communication when supporting parents facing postnatal challenges. To meet this need, Clarity Singapore has launched a 5-minute video Clarity for Moms-Parenthood & Mental Health: You’re Not Alone | Support for Mums & Dads.
Clarity Singapore is committed to reducing the stigma surrounding help-seeking by sharing personal stories. To kick-start and normalise conversations about the hidden pressures new mothers and fathers face and the growing need to care for their mental health, we are excited to announce the upcoming launch of our podcast, Birth of a Mother, on April 28, 2025. The series will explore the realities of parenthood, with the aim to offer support and resources for both mothers and fathers navigating postnatal challenges. The podcasts include feature interviews with moms who had struggled with peri-natal depression and anxiety, and expert tips from Dr Gillian from IMH. Watch this space Maternal Wellness
